New York Ranks 47th for Construction Business Climate, According to Associated Builders and Contractors Scorecard

ALBANY, NY, Nov. 22– New York is a poor place for construction contractors to do business, according to state rankings released today by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). “Building America: The Merit Shop Scorecard” reviews and ranks state-specific information significant to the success of the commercial and industrial construction industry.  The scorecard identifies states, such as New York, where improvements need to be made to create an environment where merit shop contractors are well positioned to succeed as well as states that have created contractor-friendly business environments.  The Merit Shop Scorecard grades states on their policies on project labor agreement (PLA) and prevailing-wage mandates and Right-to-Work status as well as their construction job growth rate, commitment to developing a well-trained workforce, career and technical education opportunities and results, and use of public-private partnerships.   “New York policymakers can re ... Students are Hands On with ABC Construction Explorers Post

Rochester, NY – High school students in the Rochester area take a hands-on approach to learning more about construction through the Skilled Trades Program run by ABC member GMR Associates, Inc. in collaboration with the Exploring Division of the Seneca Waterways Council. Once a month students attend a post meeting at an ABC member company and for two hours go through a number of hands on stations exposing them to the different trades. Throughout the session, Explorers are able to ask questions, learning from those who work in the field every day.  Exposure to the various trades gives students an opportunity to help determine if a particular field is of interest. This unique learning and hands-on opportunity has already provided opportunity to dozens of Rochester area students and continues to grow. This year students have learned by visiting companies like ES Systems, which is a plumbing, HVAC and Fire Alarm contractor; and Gypsum Systems Interiors, a drywall and acoustical contractor.  ... Chuck Goodrich Elected to Lead ABC in 2017; George Nash is Chair-elect

During its Nov. 15 meeting in Dallas, the ABC Board of Directors elected Chuck Goodrich, president of Gaylor Electric Inc., Noblesville, Ind., to serve as the association's 2017 national chair. George Nash of La Plata, Md., was elected to serve as ABC’s 2017 chair-elect.    New members elected to the board are: Diane Byron, I.E. Pacific, San Diego, Pacific Region vice chair,Jay Baldwin, Reliable Contracting Co. Inc, Gambrills, Md., Mid-Atlantic Region vice chair, and Jimmy Greene, president of the ABC Greater Michigan Chapter, chapter presidents' liaison. ABC Applauds Court’s Ruling to Permanently Block DOL’s Persuader Rule

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 16– Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today welcomed news that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas has permanently blocked the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) “persuader rule,” officially named the "Interpretation  of  the  ‘Advice’  Exemption  in  Section  203(c)  of  the  Labor-Management  Reporting  and  Disclosure  Act." In finding the rule unlawful, the District Court has maintained employers’ right to obtain advice from labor relations experts. “Today’s decision is another repudiation of the U.S. Department of Labor’s drastic overreach under the Obama administration,” said ABC Vice President of Legislative and Political Affairs Kristen Swearingen. “Associated Builders and Contractors is pleased that the court has ruled to maintain employers’ free speech rights and is hopeful that under a Trump adminis ... Overtime Rule Goes into Effect Dec. 1st

On May 23, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) published a final rule changing the federal exemptions to overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act for so-called "white collar" workers, which include administrative, executive, professional and computer professional employees, that have long been exempt from being paid time-and-one-half for working more than 40 hours per week. The rule will essentially double the current minimum annual salary level for exemption from $23,660 to $47,476 per year effective Dec. 1, 2016.

Trump Elected President; Republicans Hold Majorities in Congress

Donald Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States, defeating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in a race called in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Nov. 9. In addition, Republicans maintained control of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and will now control the executive and legislative branches of government for the first time since 2006.

Associated Builders and Contractors Announces Seven-Figure Ad Buy

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today announced it has made a seven-figure ad buy comprised of issue ads and express advocacy in six states. The ad buy will include radio and statewide digital ads in support of pro-free enterprise candidates and issues in Florida, Indiana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. Construction Unemployment Rates Improve in 32 States Year-Over-Year, ABC Says

September not seasonally adjusted (NSA) construction unemployment rates improved in 32 states and the nation on a year-over-year basis, according to analysis released today by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). The national NSA construction unemployment rate of 5.2 percent was 0.3 percent lower than a year ago, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Read the rest of entry »
