Associated Builders & Contractors Issues Statement Urging Fair, Open Competition on State Fairground’s $50 Million

“We applaud the efforts of New York State to modernize and provide much needed improvements to the State Fairgrounds, and certainly support continued investments that can spur further economic benefits. Having said that, and in light of the investigation into the awarding of contracts at the Solar City facility in Buffalo, we hope that New York State and relevant agencies do everything in their power to provide a transparent bidding process.  Unfortunately, based on documents we have reviewed, it looks like not much has changed as it’s clear that a similar bidding approach to the one being used in the ‘Buffalo Billion’ is being considered for this project. Upcoming Training

Through a grant, ABC will be providing a FREE OSHA 10 safety course in the Buffalo Region. The course will run on October 20th & October 27th in our Buffalo office. Deadline to register is October 14th, but spots fill up fast, so we encourage you to register early. Through this grant, we will also be providing a FREE OSHA 30 in the Metro/Long Island Region. The course will run November 9th, 11th, 16th,18th, 30th and December 2nd in our Ronkonkoma office. Deadline to register is October 30th, and classes fill up fast so please register early.

Associated Builders & Contractors, Empire State Holds Event Highlighting Best Practices in Construction Safety

Associated Builders and Contractors today held an event showcasing best practices in construction safety. Featuring interactive opportunities and experts in the field of construction safety, professionals in construction were able to see first-hand new and innovative practices in safety management. Over 300 people in the industry from across the state attended the event.

ABC, Empire State Opposes Restrictive Contractor Proposal

(Syracuse, NY)- Associated Builders and Contractors, Empire State Chapter President Brian Sampson today voiced strong opposition to Councilor Khalid Bey’s proposal to "require companies that have city contracts worth at least $100,000 for construction work, public works projects and certain other services to recruit Syracuse residents to perform at least 20 percent of their labor."

Tax Cuts to Offset Minimum Wage Hike?

As could be expected, Governor Cuomo's proposal to hike the minimum wage to $15 an hour drew opposition from business groups from across the State. While many speculated that this was his ultimate goal after circumventing the Legislature and going straight to an appointed wage board to increase the minimum wage for fast food workers, it was not expected to be proposed this soon after.

Educating Local School District on PLA's

Of course once the bond is approved, you are going to hear from certain groups regarding the attachment of a Project Labor Agreement (or PLA) to the work. While I’m not sure of your familiarity with these costly agreements, I wanted to share with you a few concerns we have with PLA’s. As administrators of tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money, I’m sure you would like to be as educated as possible when making decisions of this enormity.

Minimum Wage Increase

Governor Cuomo and Vice President Biden were together in New York to announce their support for raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour across the board. The proposal discussed implement the $15 an hour minimum wage in New York City by 2018 and statewide by 2010. We strongly oppose this proposal for a number of reasons.

Sprinkler Mandate Voted Down

The New York State Code Council voted down a mandate that would have required fire sprinklers to be installed in every new one and two family home in New York State. Read the rest of entry »

NLRB Update

On Thursday the National Labor Relations Board handed down one of the biggest labor decisions of the Obama administration, ruling a contractor is equally responsible for labor issues committed by its subcontractors.
