The New York State Code Council voted down a mandate that would have required fire sprinklers to be installed in every new one and two family home in New York State.
The ruling puts New York State on par with 47 other states throughout the country who have decided against this mandate, one that who have added anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000 to the cost of a new home. As you can imagine, this mandated increase would have made it even more difficult for many who want to build a home to do so.
Those building homes are still encouraged to install fire sprinklers in their new homes, and there is a law in place that requires home builders to present prospective home buyers with information on the benefits and costs of installing fire sprinklers in New York State.
