About the Program

The ABC Exploring Program is affiliated with “Learning for Life” and offers youth ages 14-20 an opportunity to explore different career options in a particular area of interest. It helps them to develop a sense of responsibility and get a feel for life in the real world. There are a number of career options that youth can choose to explore, and Associated Builders and Contractors, Empire State has taken up providing students opportunities in the skilled-trades career option. In this field, students attend several sessions throughout the school year, with a different contractor running a different post each month and offering students a chance to engage in hands-on projects.

Giving Back to the Community

The capstone project in the ABC Explorer Post program is traditionally a service project that benefits a program in the community, and gives the students a chance to put to practice what they have learned. This past year, the capstone project was the building of picnic tables for Hope Hall School in Rochester. The tables were identified as a need by Hope Hall.

Workforce Development

With a large expected shortage of skilled workers in the construction field over the next several years, this program also helps to spur an interest in the trades among youth. It also assist in developing skilled workers who have a genuine interest in learning as well as giving back to their community.
