Growing Stronger in the City that Never Sleeps
In the construction trade, New York City is perhaps one of the busiest cities in the world. While simultaneously undergoing a construction boom and being the center of contention between the merit shops and the unions, the costs for entry into this market is high. So are the risks.
As merit shop contractors operating in a union-dominated city, we’ve fought many bureaucratic and political battles. But it was the introduction of a mandatory apprenticeship law by a union-friendly city council that almost did us in.
The odds of beating this legislation were stacked against us until my chance meeting with the leadership of ABC’s Empire chapter. Our collective efforts led to compromise legislation that saved my company, thousands of others and made building in New York City much safer for workers in both the merit shop and the unions.
It was this successful effort that led to the creation of the New York City Regional Leadership Committee of the Associated Builders and Contractors Empire State Chapter. I am not only one of those stakeholders – I am proud to serve as New York City Regional Leadership Chairman.
The greatest achievements often require the work of many like-minded individuals working together. If you’re a New York builder interested in innovation, improvements in safety, and the power that comes with a strong coalition, I highly recommend you explore the benefits of joining our ABC partnership.
