Mullan Award

Empire State Chapter Wins 2004 Mullan Award

February 3, 2005
I received a phone call this morning from ABC National to congratulate the Empire State Chapter on winning the 2004 Mullan Award for Division 1. It was noted that our closest contender, the Golden Gate Chapter, was neck and neck with us right up to the end, but our final dues check for December put us way over the top. Special thanks to Scott Zylka and the leadership of the WNY region, as they brought in a significant number of members in December as a result of their membership drive. Thanks also to Ruth Mulford, Diane Bouvin, and the Long Island/Metro leadership, as that region brought in a large number of new members right at the end as well. And of course, thanks to John Nerney, ABC's membership director, for his hard work in coordinating all of the membership success across the state. Thanks also to the Workers Compensation Trust for all their efforts in bringing in new Trust members which results in new ABC members in many cases over the course of the year.

Most of all, on behalf of the staff of Empire State ABC, I'd like to thank you, the leaders of this great organization, for continuing to provide your support and leadership in guiding us to the successes that we accomplish. Your dedication and hard work on behalf of this organization is much appreciated.

Rebecca A. Meinking
President
Empire State Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc.

Congratulations to ALL, this is quite an amazing result. The highest taxed highest unionized state in the Nation has won the Mullan for three years in a row. Many thanks to all that made this possible. Not only does this provide ABC EMPIRE STATE with a growing membership but also it gives us an ever larger voice when we go Knocking on doors of our elected officials.

We, the Empire State Chapter should be very proud of this accomplishment. The hard work and dedication of the Membership and staff are a great tribute to all of us. We continue to leave our "mark" on the construction industry and all the businesses we represent.

Congratulations to all.

Chip Jones
Chairman of the Board

Mullan Award

The Charles A. Mullan Award is the most prestigious membership growth award which a chapter can receive. Charles Mullan was one of the founding fathers of ABC as well as its first president. Just as Charles Mullan had the vision and determination to grow ABC into a strong viable national association, the Mullan Award recognizes those chapters who are dedicated to the same level of commitment to growing ABC.

ELIGIBILITY - The Mullan report is posted twice monthly - shortly after the 15th and the last day of the month. The Mullan awards are given each year to the chapter in each of ten divisions with the greatest growth in the amount of National dues dollars remitted. While other chapter awards measure growth in the number of members, the Mullan measures growth in the amount of actual dues revenue.

Charlie Mullan

ABC Founder Charlie Mullan Dies at 89

Charlie Mullan, president of highly successful Baltimore general contracting firm Mullan Contracting and a founding father of ABC, died July 3 at the age of 89. In May 1950, Mullan arranged the initial meeting in his home with six other area contractors to form the Associated Builders and Contractors of Maryland. As a result of his action, every Mullan jobsite in the city became the target of union picketing and violence.

Mullan also served as ABC's first chairman and was named as one of the organization's nine "Leaders of the Century" in 2000.

"Charlie Mullan was a visionary with the courage and determination to create a strong, national organization that has changed the face of the construction industry," said Kirk Pickerel, ABC president and CEO. "Charlie's passing is a significant loss for merit shop construction and free enterprise. He will be sorely missed."
