Empire State Chapter Craft Champions Compete in Orlando

Pictured above with Becky Meinking, ABC President, and Chip Jones, ABC Chairman of the Board, are the five apprentices and one instructor who participated in the 2005 ABC National Craft Championships in Orlando this past February. Mike Zemaitis, plumbing/pipefitting instructor with Kennedy Mechanical of Rochester, was sponsored as a faculty advisor by Monroe Community College, our NCCER partner. Competitors included: James Maxwell, an electrical apprentice with C.M. Richey Electrical of Long Island; Kevin Aponte, an electrical apprentice with Core Electric of Long Island; Steve Deaton, a plumbing apprentice with E.S. Systems of Rochester; John Moriarty, a plumbing apprentice with General Mechanical Group of Albany; and Kevin Sill, a welding apprentice with Albany Specialties of Albany. Not pictured above was Jason Whalen, an electrical apprentice with Demco New York Corp of Syracuse, who was unable to compete due to an injury. Manning the camera and also not pictured was Jerry Talerico, an electrical instructor with Demco New York Corp of Syracuse, who was the Empire State Chapter's 2005 ABC Craft Instructor of the Year and who also served as a faculty advisor in Orlando. Next year the 2006 ABC National Craft Championships will be held in Las Vegas in February. Congratulations to a fine group of craft professionals!
Empire State Chapter Names 2005 ABC Craft Instructor of the Year

Jerry Talerico, an NCCER electrical instructor in the Central New York region and Director of Safety and Education for Demco New York Corp, was named the Empire State Chapter's 2005 ABC Craft Instructor of the Year. Jerry was nominated by Rick Erickson, which is an honor in itself. Rick is our Empire State Chapter master trainer, who has trained hundreds of NCCER instructors over the past 10+ years. Demco New York Corp's CEO, Peter Donohoe, is a member of our ABC board and our representative on ABC National's Careers in Construction committee. This is very fitting, because Jerry epitomizes ABC's commitment to School to Careers in Construction.
Jerry serves on several advisory committees for local secondary vocational schools. He's a sought after guest speaker in classrooms and a strong proponent of student work experience programs in construction. Jerry is committed to his community. For the past two years ABC has partnered with local minority advocacy groups to offer month-long construction readiness programs to minority youth. Jerry has faithfully participated in each and every employer panel at graduation for these students and serves as a mentor to help them find jobs in construction.
Jerry recently served as the contest chairperson for the Construction Teamworks competition for the Skills USA-VICA student vocational club at SUNY Delhi. Jerry has been instrumental in forming several teams from ABC members to participate in the local Junior Achievement Bowl-a-Thon fundraiser each year. Jerry has been an NCCER instructor in our electrical training program for the past three years, and is an excellent role model for our apprentices. In fact he served as faculty advisor and accompanied our five apprentices who competed in the 2005 ABC National Craft Championships in Orlando last month.
