Skills USA-VICA
Empire State ABC Sponsors Skills USA-VICA Teamworks Competition
The second annual Skills USA-VICA Teamworks competition was held February 10, 2005 at SUNY Delhi in Delhi, NY. VICA, a nationally recognized vocational skills club, holds state and national competitions in the major construction trades—carpentry, masonry, electrical, and plumbing.
Last year the first ever Teamworks competition in New York was held at SUNY Delhi. It was a regional event with three teams competing from Central New York. This competition showcases the merit-shop philosophy at its core. Instead of students in each trade competing individually, Teamworks combines one student from each trade and has them work together to build a structure. The event focuses on cooperation, team building as well as simulating the work environment of a merit shop contractor.
This year’s event proved to be larger than 2004. Five teams competed from around the Central New York region, and just like last year, ABC members stepped up to sponsor all the materials for the event.
Sam Fresina of Tersal Construction along with Barnes & Cone provided all masonry materials. Steve Tallman of TAG Mechanical Services provided all plumbing materials. Peter Donohoe of Demco NY Corp. provided all electrical materials. 2004 ABC National Contractor of the Year Award winner Dennis Weller of Structural Associates, Art Mack of A.R. Mack Construction, and Mike Bongiovanni of M.A. Bongiovanni contributed all carpentry supplies. Demco NY Corp.’s safety director, Jerry Talerico, the Empire State Chapter’s Craft Instructor of the Year, served as contest chairperson.
The 2005 Teamworks competition was won by the Burton Ramer Tech team. Their team will be heading to Kansas City to compete in the national competition. On behalf of ABC New York, "Good Luck!"
