Isabelle Street

Isabelle Street Project

The construction at 35 Isabelle began with ground breaking in July, in a program run by the Rochester Housing Authority partnered with Associated Builders and Contractors. The students are part of a unique program that will help them gain construction skills in all phases of residential construction. Not only will they get hands-on experience but also the related theory using the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum, now being adopted all over the US by many construction related industries and craft associations. Students will alsoi get a transcript from NCCER that will be used towards future training and as an employability profile.

A tremendous amount of progress has been made on the house since the last update, including completion of the floor and wall framing, roofing, and vinyl siding.

Floor framing was done with engineered joist I beams. These floor joists were installed on pressure treated sills with Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) being used for the box sill. The theory was delivered in the classroom and in the field by the instructors, with the work being performed by the students. The floor frame was capped by tongue and groove 3/4" plywood. Wall framing came next. The first wall to stand was one of the longest walls. The wall was sheathed with 1/2" plywood and framed with 2 x 6 lumber, this wall was quite heavy, but was successfully raised at braced without mishap.

The other walls were raised and the second floor was framed. This was capped with roof trusses, which form an "L" shaped roof. The students also applied the architectural shingles, and installed windows and doors. Finally, the vinyl siding was completed just in time to secure the structure from the winter weather!

The students are now working with electricians from the (RADEC) company on the wiring of the house. The students will perform the actual wiring tasks under the supervision of a licensed electrician, and will receive classroom instruction in at least one module from the NCCER curriculum for Electrical Level 1.

To recognize the super progress to date, and to celebrate the coming holiday season, the program administrators held a ‘Thanksgiving’ luncheon for the students and staff from ABC and RHA. It was a joyous occasion, held in the living room of the house! The meal was served on two horses covered with holiday-themed tablecloths, and the group toasted to their success as they looked forward to completing the interior of the house during the next several weeks!

It’s a real work in progress…and the students are the contractors!!!!
