The Empire State ABC Political Action Committee was formed in 1980 and acts to protect and enhance free enterprise and the merit philosophy in the construction industry.
Since nearly every aspect of our economic and professional lives is affected by the government, the need for us to participate effectively in the political process is critical. ABC members know that just a few votes can make a difference. We work hard to develop both action and dollars to show our strength and have a powerful voice in government.
During the 1997-98 election campaign cycle, ABC members rallied across the country to volunteer time, money and resources to candidates who support the merit shop. ABC raised nearly $2 million from builders and contractors nationwide who believe in the merit shop and want to build its voice.
Through our political action committee (PAC), ABC is able to provide national support for hundreds of federal races important to ABC members across the country. The ABC PAC is a fund of personal contributions from our members. It represents the thousands of individuals in ABC who join together by giving financial support to bolster local efforts with a strong, collective national voice. ABC's Contractors For Free Enterprise fund allows companies to contribute to education for merit shop issues.
ABC understands the importance of supporting good candidates who have demonstrated that they are willing to stand up for merit shop principles. We analyze the positions of each candidate, assess the local situation, and rely on the endorsement of ABC's chapters before recommending support. We have very strict standards: all contribution decisions are governed by our PAC Trustees, who are members of ABC, and all contributions are distributed at the local level.
ABC members are committed to building the voice of the merit shop and fighting for our principles in Washington and across the U.S. Together, we are building...The Merit Shop Movement. Strength in Numbers.
