ABC members need to immediately contact their state legislators to demand action on the Morelle/Stachowski (A.5700/S.2898), legislation that would authorize industrial development agencies to assist in financing so-called “civic facility” projects.
The state legislature is scheduled to adjourn for the summer on June 22, 2009. Given the leadership impasse in the state Senate, it is quite likely that many issues will be left hanging for some time.
The Morelle/Stachowski bill would unleash up to $2.5 billion worth of construction projects all across New York State for non-profit organizations, including YMCA’s, facilities for the disabled, medical and educational institutions. These projects could be undertaken within the next 180 days in most instances and would represent tens of thousands of construction jobs in every corner of the Empire State.
ABC has vigorously opposed efforts by organized labor to apply prevailing wage requirements to IDA projects and so far we have been successful in this effort. But, organized labor continues to pressure the legislature to pass union-friendly bills. Your voice is needed now more than ever as we seek to help counter their efforts and to expand New York’s construction economy.
